ARTIST AND BAKER

You might be thinking what a strange change of context within a website devoted to animals! The beautiful bouquet of flowers pictured right was gifted to Peter and myself but they’re not flowers – they’re cakes, yes, CAKES! A big THANK YOU -Yummy!

This amazing gift was baked and decorated by Tracey Catling as a show of gratitude to us for helping her and husband Nick with the care of Max and Noaks.

Each flower is an individual cake topped with butter icing skilfully crafted to resemble a flower. See below some of the special cakes Tracey has baked.

As well as being an accomplished baker Tracey is a talented artist and takes commissions for Pet Portraits. Check out her Facebook page and note her generosity to Grande Daze. A percentage of the commissions is donated to help the animals at the Centre

Noaks: A New Chapter After Max’s Tragic Passing

The beautiful memories of Max and the tragedy of his death from Canine Leishmaniosis; leading to the healing experience with Noaks.

Sometimes sad stories come through the gates of Grande Daze and a piece of our heart is broken. Max was a beautiful Anatolian Shepherd dog and when just a puppy he was rescued from the back of a lorry in Spain. His life with Tracey and Nick was full of love and care and he gave them such devotion and happiness in the, all too short, 2 years of his life.

In the long years of helping animals I had only once seen the evidence of Max’s illness which could only be proved by a certain type of blood test. With the approval of Tracey and Nick and the help of Grande Daze, the vets went to work on the blood test. Our worst fears were confirmed, Max had a form of Canine Malaria transmitted by sandflies and known as Canine Leishmaniosis. See the link at the bottom of this page.

The illness is common in the tropics and thankfully, very rare in the northern hemisphere. Max’s background was unknown and the illness is not evident until the worst symptoms appear; from then on the end is quick and death cannot be averted. Sadly, the rarity of the illness in Northern Europe means that blood tests are not performed soon enough on puppies. If detected before symptoms develop the disease can be treated with regular Malaria tablets and provide the prospect of a longer life for the infected animal. A simple citronella collar can help prevent the disease by repelling the sandflies, (obtainable from many internet sites). No one was aware of this for Max and despite everyone’s best efforts he succumbed and died in the arms of Tracey and Nick. In Tracey’s words:

From this awful experience, the tragic circumstances of the loss of Max has resulted in a serendipitous occurrence – Noaks, the dog often accompanying Max for exercise is helping Tracey and Nick heal their broken hearts. The three of them are now forming new bonds of happiness.

Noaks and Nick and Tracey now enjoy life together and they are regular visitors to Grande Daze. Occasionally, Noaks has a holiday at the Centre. Tracey has baked a thank you cake.

We extend our condolences to Tracey and Nick for the loss of Max and our good wishes for the life being shared with Noaks. Their hope and ours is that this article and the link below will help others be aware of the danger posed by the sand fly and adopting from a source with unknown background or a country where the disease is prevalent.

JACKIE BOY

Jackie Boy – a doggy gentleman, came to us at the age of 12 after it is thought his previous elderly owner had died. A quiet life with no hassle, food on a regular basis, water always on hand and a daily stroll were all that Jack wanted or enjoyed. He didn’t like a lot of fuss but enjoyed a nice chat and a pat on the head every now and then throughout the day. As he aged, Jack found it difficult to walk around the parks in the area but he enjoyed a ride in the car and would wait for his companions to have their daily constitutionals. His idea of exercise was to lope around the garden on the same route once a day after his main meal. When he began to lose his sight he went more slowly around the garden and got to know the route by following his nose. After a while the lopes got slower and shorter until it was just a visit outside for the essentials.

He snoozed most of the day, only waking to eat his food. He was very contented, always comfortable and as he drifted into his dotage he still responded to the conversations and enjoyed a gentle tickle behind the ears. His snoozes grew into deeper and deeper sleeps and his breathing became shallower until there was no more breathing and he was rested forever.

10 Years – The Successes of the Rescues

A big THANK YOU to all the contestants, Top Kebab and all the helpers on the Fun Day on Saturday 8th June. It was a glorious day and donations and money raised will help the Rescues in the Centre. The funding will go towards special diets, vets bills and general care needs. THANK YOU from Peter and Myself and all those animals in our care – Woof, woof, chirp, cheep, squawk, baa and miaow. (see below – After the effort – the rewards)

This year we celebrate our 10th year as an animal rescue and our work continues. Since January we have had more dogs and owners achieving a Certificate for Good Behaviour, Bovril, Sasha, Finn and Poppy. Several dogs are undertaking training courses to pass the grades to allow them to compete in Agility Competitions.

Bovril, Sasha, Finn and Poppy are amongst the many who have happy homes where they enjoy loving companionship. Participating in training for agility and/or obedience has given them confidence with other dogs and people. They are all socialized – a far cry from fear, abandonment and loneliness.

This year will be the first time that some of the dogs who have passed through the grades will be able to compete. We wish everyone the best of luck and thank everyone for their efforts.

Kodie and Roo are the latest to have achieved their Grade 2. Updates and more information on the agility events can be seen on the Facebook page Club Grande Daze Agility.

For those of us of a more mature and sedate pace we have Hoopers, click the link Hoopers

We have re-homed hundreds of dogs, held dozens and dozens of fundraising events. Our onsite shop ‘Boîte-Box/Bric-a-Brac’ opened in 2018 and continues to receive donations to provide bargains for all those who visit and have a browse.

We are grateful to all those who participate in events, support us with donations. buy things from our shop, assist us with exercising the rescues and cleaning and maintaining areas of the Centre.

UNFORTUNATELY, WE EXPECT TO MEET MORE NEEDY ANIMALS IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS BUT LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATION.

We go forward to the next years with new plans and ideas which will be posted in due course.
THANK YOU ANITA AND PETER

FUNDRAISING UPDATE

Reaching the end of another busy few months with the animals, we are now able to update everyone on how the support and the money raised has helped the animals.

In recent months we have continued to take care of the animals needing rehabilitation and medical attention. 4 dogs and 2 more adult cats have been rescued. The vets bills incurred have been for surgery and treatment for malnutrition, neutering and treating injuries of the new rescues. Ongoing
costs for parasite prevention and updating inoculations of those animals still in rehabilitation are being managed. The everyday expenses of special dietary needs and general feeding requirements, plus grooming and hygiene items continue.

We are delighted to report that three dogs have recently arrived in their forever homes.

We’ll keep you posted in a few months time on how things are going. You have helped us to care for all the needy animals in the refuge. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support.

Anita and Peter Edwards.

RAIN AND SEEDS, PLANTS & BRIC-A-BRAC – 27TH APRIL – A WONDERFUL DAY

It rained and then it rained and RAINED at the Plant & Seed Swap on Saturday … but the people came and the people smiled rays of sunshine. The event was a wonderful success.

We would like to thank everyone who brought, swapped, bought and generally supported us. Our benevoles were treated with such kindness and consideration we were bowled over. Peter and I are most appreciative of the effort everyone made and we send our grateful thanks to you all, especially, to the Landlady of the Red Lion, Suzie Coultrip and her staff, to Beverley Jane Wood who organised the event and liaised with the Grande Daze Benevoles and also made cakes and to the other bakers, Chris Broadwell, Nicky Peruche and Susie Morgan Champion along with Alan and Nicky Minton who donated a tree for the raffle prize.

After the effects on the Centre of the pandemic and Mange Tu? closing its’ doors for good, Peter and I decided it was time to make changes to the hectic fundraising previously undertaken. The hours spent by us to load and unload the Purple Van and to leave it at a venue for several hours is no longer viable as it is needed for its’ intended purpose – grooming! Similarly, the large events we held in the past no longer achieve the results matching the effort. Our benevoles have aged or are experiencing long term illness and others did not wish to continue working in the shop. It was therefore decided that the fundraising would be focused at our shop at the Centre with just 2 benevoles as staff. Only by request and special circumstances will we go to outside venues – The Red Lion at Desertines is one such venue.

Thank you all for a wonderful day.

OUR FRIEND LORNA TATE

It is with sadness that we write to say that a valued supporter, Lorna Tate, died recently. Lorna was a benevole for many years before ill health forced her to retire from her work to help the Rescue. When our shop was opened Lorna was on the rota and helped to sell things each week. We were always pleased to see her behind the stalls at many of our sales events. Her gentle presence will be missed and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Peter and the family.

MANY, MANY WAYS ………..

A fantastic success

So Many, Many Ways to Say ………………………………..THANK YOU!

Our Christmas Sale on the 3rd was a fantastic success. We extend a big Thank You to all those people who bought items and were so generous in supporting us to enable us to care for the animals. We are going into the New Year with funds to help us through the winter.

A thank you goes out to those who donated useful items or beautiful objet d’art.

We are so grateful to all the benevoles who helped on the day and those who gave of their time in the months up to the sale.

So many, many ways and so many kind, generous people we wish to thank – but simple is best and sincerely expressed – THANK YOU!

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2024.
