The Hoopers World Championships 14th – 15th September 2024
View the slideshow for the wonderful pictorial story of the success of Team France Hoopers, in particular, the 3 participants partly sponsored by Club Grande Daze Agility for the fuel for their journey. It is important to give some team sponsorship where possible as it promotes the welfare of animals through the shared activites of people and their dogs. Club Grande Daze Agility emphasises that rescue dogs and older dogs and more mature people can benefit from the exercises and training involved in Hoopers.

The beautiful memories of Max and the tragedy of his death from Canine Leishmaniosis; leading to the healing experience with Noaks.
Sometimes sad stories come through the gates of Grande Daze and a piece of our heart is broken. Max was a beautiful Anatolian Shepherd dog and when just a puppy he was rescued from the back of a lorry in Spain. His life with Tracey and Nick was full of love and care and he gave them such devotion and happiness in the, all too short, 2 years of his life.
MAX
As Max developed into an adult it became apparent that he was ill. His symptoms were strange and quite shocking to Tracey and Nick but Max was stoical and devoted to them, continuing his close feelings towards them. Numerous vets visits, medications and remedies brought no respite. Max’s illness continued its’ relentless hold and became more harrowing as the days went by but he battled on. The brave efforts of Tracey and Nick, the skills of the vets and the experience of Peter I couldn’t prevent Max’s decline. When the pads of his paws showed signs of detachment from his toes and his gait worsened, the diagnosis of his illness was realised.
CANINE LEISHMANIOSIS
In the long years of helping animals I had only once seen the evidence of Max’s illness which could only be proved by a certain type of blood test. With the approval of Tracey and Nick and the help of Grande Daze, the vets went to work on the blood test. Our worst fears were confirmed, Max had a form of Canine Malaria transmitted by sandflies and known as Canine Leishmaniosis. See the link at the bottom of this page.
The illness is common in the tropics and thankfully, very rare in the northern hemisphere. Max’s background was unknown and the illness is not evident until the worst symptoms appear; from then on the end is quick and death cannot be averted. Sadly, the rarity of the illness in Northern Europe means that blood tests are not performed soon enough on puppies. If detected before symptoms develop the disease can be treated with regular Malaria tablets and provide the prospect of a longer life for the infected animal. A simple citronella collar can help prevent the disease by repelling the sandflies, (obtainable from many internet sites). No one was aware of this for Max and despite everyone’s best efforts he succumbed and died in the arms of Tracey and Nick. In Tracey’s words:

From this awful experience, the tragic circumstances of the loss of Max has resulted in a serendipitous occurrence – Noaks, the dog often accompanying Max for exercise is helping Tracey and Nick heal their broken hearts. The three of them are now forming new bonds of happiness.
Noaks and Nick and Tracey now enjoy life together and they are regular visitors to Grande Daze. Occasionally, Noaks has a holiday at the Centre. Tracey has baked a thank you cake.
We extend our condolences to Tracey and Nick for the loss of Max and our good wishes for the life being shared with Noaks. Their hope and ours is that this article and the link below will help others be aware of the danger posed by the sand fly and adopting from a source with unknown background or a country where the disease is prevalent.
At the Breed Show at Segrè on Sunday 27th August beautiful Reboot triumphed again; she was 1st Excellent in the Open Class. It was a very good day that rewarded the efforts of both Reboot and Nadège. Wonderful ambassadors for Grande Daze Companion Centre – CONGRATULATIONS!
This revolutionary new cleaner clears up all those hard to get cobwebs, gets into every nook and cranny and leaves them spotless. Of course, like all cleaners it too needs a bit of a brush up after all the hard work. It’s called a Dylan Griff and is patent pending. Technological innovation at its very best!

Humans and dogs are social animals and enjoy sharing activities together.
I’m sure that as you read this article your spirits will lift. Humans and dogs are social animals and enjoy sharing activities together. Recently the activities of walking and talking have come to the fore in a most pleasing way and includes the eating element for us humans.
Grande Daze is enjoying the fundraising and advertising support of the Tea Room, ‘Le Patis’, where you can view paintings and crafts by local people and Grande Daze artists and crafts people. Many of our friends and clients are customers of ‘Le Patis’ and eagerly recommend a visit to enjoy the delicious food served in the tastefully decorated tea room.
At Grande Daze, as well as boarding, grooming and training we have a dog walking area where you can walk with your dog on and off the lead. Get together with your friends to book a session and you can enjoy conversation while you and your dogs get exercise. Having tired the dogs at a training session or a walk you can then browse in our onsite shop for that something you didn’t know you needed but can’t do without.
After your bargain hunt you may prefer to take your dog home before meandering along the country roads to Landivy, “Le Patis” Salon de The for lunch, a cream tea or afternoon tea (depending on the time of day). Of course, at this stage in your day out, if your dog still accompanies you, it will be necessary for a short stroll and a drink for the dog before you go for your meal inside accompanied by your dog, or, you might even like to eat outside under the awning with your dog at your feet.
You can be sure of a warm welcome from Jon and Jason, Proprietors of Le Patis. Once ensconced at your table you can indulge your taste buds with cakes, sandwiches and other delights made in-house by Jon and served to you by their friendly waitress Claire. When you have tasted the sweet and savoury flavours and mind blowing textures of his cooking it is obvious that baking is a labour of love for Jon. In his words, “When I bake I am in another world, there’s no stress just the all consuming aromas of combining wonderful ingredients. The process is creative, like an artist painting a picture”. It is delicious food!
Of course, you can enjoy your day out in reverse order and walk off the calories gained from your too good to resist indulgence of those Le Patis gastronomic delights!
Anita and Peter and Jon and Jason would love to see you at their respective establishments!

Our two champions in the show ring triumphed again in Mid December. With Anita and Nadege, Tutti and Reboot really enjoyed parading around the show ring in Nante for another breed show. Their garden of rosettes is growing beautifully!
On 25th June we had a fabulous day demonstrating the work at Grande Daze Companion Centre. We started the day with Agility and Hoopers followed by Carole with her Gun Dogs, Piper, Harry and Dollar, showing off their skills. You can see the slide-shows at the bottom of this article, “The Action”, “The Gun Dogs” and “The Portraits”.
Noaks
The dogs participating in the event posed for pictures and Peter judged them.
The demonstration finished with much excitement and cheering for the Relay Race when all of the eager participants in their teams threw themselves enthusiastically into dashing to the finish line. The support of the crowd and their encouragement was overwhelming – a big thank you to everyone.
Lola showing what she can do!
The winner overall was Roxanne with Marie who has trained her dogs with Grande Daze for many years. Hot on the heels of Marie and Roxanne were Gary and Lola. Gary and his wife Wendy have adopted dogs from Grande Daze and helped us train the rescue dogs. They all enjoyed the day, especially with Lola who is a French bred German Shepherd Dog and at the age of seven and half proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Nick Catling, a professional photographer, kindly took the beautiful photographs we have of the event. We have helped Nick and his wife, Tracy, to educate their dog. Thank you Nick, your contribution to our event is much appreciated.
A good day of fun was had by all!
Please see our slide-shows of the event below:

The Boys going through their paces – Short and Sweet
Reboot and Roo have gained the Qualification from CSAU, Certificat de Sociabilitè et d”Adaptitude À l’Utilisation – Good Citizen. The Poodle Roo, with Helen, learned good behaviour in the Obedience Classes at Grande Daze Animal Companion Centre, as did Reboot, the Jack Russell, with Nadège.
Helen and Roo, Nadège and Reeboot with the Adjudicators
The training began with Puppy Classes when both dogs, after vaccinations, were able to mix with other dogs. They progressed through the course doing, for example, the sit and stay whilst Helen and Nadège were out of sight. Confidence in the handler and the trust built up between them enabled the puppies to develop into well behaved and loving companions who are able to cope well with all situations. See Education and Hoopers.
We congratulate all of them and thank them for their trust in Grande Daze to educate them in human and canine companionship. We hope that their examples show that a rapport with your pet can be very rewarding. Sharing social events with your pet gives the occasion an added dimension and pleasure. Breeding and looks aren’t everything – you can have the ugliest cross-breed in the world with good manners if you put the time and work in. We welcome newcomers to the Centre to educate any age to enjoy a rich companionship with their pets. To contact us please see Contact Us
